According to a Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) report, the total foreign-born or immigrant population in the U.S. as of October was a record 49.5 million.
The report, which referenced the Census Bureau’s Current Population Survey (CPS), revealed that that there has been a whopping 4.5 million increase in foreign-born residents since President Joe Biden took office. Researchers found that at 15 percent, the immigrant share of the U.S. population is currently the highest ever recorded in American history.
This discovery is crucial because administrative numbers, such as border encounters or legal immigrant arrivals, do not accurately “measure the actual size of the immigrant population, which is what ultimately determines immigration’s impact on the country,” explained the researchers.
The estimated percentage of foreign-born residents is probably low because according to the CIS, government reporting is not yet available to properly estimate illegal immigration through October.
At the House Education and the Workforce Committee’s hearing on the open border in September, the CIS testified that the illegal population grew from 10.2 million in January 2021 to 12.6 million by May 2023. With the border crisis still ongoing, the CIS said there is no reason to believe that things have changed significantly since May.
If that is the case, then at least 2.5 million of the 4.5 million increase in immigrants from January 2021 to October 2023 are illegal immigrants. And if this number is adjusted to include the undercount of illegal immigrants in the CPS, the CIS estimates the illegal population to be 12.8 million in October 2023, up from the 10.2 million reported in January 2021.
Earlier in November, the Census Bureau released new projections for the U.S. population through 2100. The CIS also challenged the government data, especially since the Census Bureau’s 2023 projections reported a total foreign-born population of 47.05 million which is at least 2.5 million below what the October 2023 CPS suggested. Additionally, the projections reveal that the foreign-born share of the U.S. population was not supposed to hit 15 percent until 2033, while the total number was not supposed to hit 49.5 million until 2027 or 2028.
The previous record of foreign-born or immigrant population in the U.S. was 14.8 percent, set 133 years ago, in 1890.
The CIS reported that the immigrant share of the population has at least tripled since 1970 and nearly doubled since 1990. The number of immigrants has increased five-fold since 1970, by as much as 2.5 times since 1990, and has surged by 59 percent since 2000.
The record number of illegal immigrants emphasizes the rapid increase in border encounters and escapees. The data also points to Biden’s lack of effort to protect the U.S. from the “invasion” of illegals.
Things look bleak for the country because the current percentage of foreign-born people in the U.S. will only continue to increase.
Figure 7 in the CPS projects the immigrant population to the end of a hypothetical Biden second term using a linear model based on trends since he started office in January 2021.
The figure suggests that the total of foreign-born illegal immigrants will reach 51.3 million — 15.5 percent of the total U.S. population — by the end of his first term in December 2024.
Should present trends continue, the total number of immigrants would reach at least 58.9 million (17.3 percent of the total population) by the end of a second Biden term. These numbers and percentages are all new record highs.
These projections suggest that if Biden gets a second term, the foreign-born population would skyrocket by 14 million within his eight years in office, with most of the migrants being illegal. This would exceed even the 11.1 million increase in the 10 years between 1990 and 2000, which is the largest numerical increase in the immigrant population ever between two censuses.
The 49.5 million immigrants now residing in the U.S. is also a new record high in American history. Since Biden took office in January 2021, it has surged by 4.5 million, a figure larger than the individual populations of 25 states.
America must be wary because there is a chance that over half of this increase, 2.5 million, is from new illegal immigration. This recent growth has significant implications for the nation’s education and healthcare systems, along with its physical infrastructure and labor force.
One of the most important questions these numbers raise is whether the country can successfully incorporate and assimilate this many people. After all, the size and growth of the immigrant population is not static. Legal immigration continues, at least at the pre-coronavirus pandemic pace, and illegal immigration most likely remains very high.
Adding so many people to the U.S. this fast may please employers and immigration advocacy groups, but the serious discussion of immigration policy must consider these alarming numbers and the implications they have for American society.
Biden and Congress must take immediate action to end the border crisis or Americans will face a troubling future and potentially dire consequences.
